Proposed changes to varicose vein MBS items

Dear College Members,

Please see below correspondence from the Australian Government Department of Health regarding proposed changes to varicose vein MBS items from 1 November 2021.

The college will be preparing a submission notifying the department of the unintended consequences of the changes.

Kind Regards

Simon Thibault

President

The Australasian College of Phlebology

Dear stakeholder

As you may be aware, the Government announced changes to a number of Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items as part of the 2021-22 Budget. These changes include amendments to a small number of varicose vein items in response to recommendations of the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) and the MBS Review Taskforce, following a comprehensive review of the items by independent clinicians, consumer representatives and health system experts. Further information is available on the MSAC website and Vascular Clinical Committee report.

As a courtesy, we wish to provide draft descriptors of the relevant varicose vein items for your information. The changes aim to clarify the intent of the items and align them with current clinical practice; prevent the inappropriate use of venography, angiography and fluoroscopy services with some procedures; and ensure appropriate patient access. The descriptors were developed based on advice from MSAC, members of the Taskforce Vascular Clinical Committee and Vascular Working Group.

If you have any significant concerns regarding unintended consequences as a result of the proposed descriptors, please advise the Department at surgicalservices@health.gov.au by no later than Friday 4 June 2021.

Other recommendations relating to varicose vein and vascular surgery services are being considered by Government and more information will be provided in due course.
