The Australasian College of Phlebology (ACP) mourns the passing of Professor Rodney (Rod) James Lane, a Vascular Surgeon, researcher, engineer, and dedicated phlebologist.
Professor Lane was one of the founding Fellows of the College and served as the first examiner in its clinical examinations, helping establish the early framework for assessment and training in phlebology. His involvement at this formative stage reflected his commitment to ensuring the highest professional and educational standards in venous medicine.
After graduating in medicine from the University of Sydney and training in vascular surgery, he went on to complete a Master of Surgery and a Doctor of Medicine focused on venous valve pathology. He later undertook a Master of Biomedical Engineering at UNSW, reflecting his unique ability to bridge surgical practice with engineering principles. This multidisciplinary perspective informed his lifelong interest in the treatment of venous disease and his contribution to innovation in vascular care.
Professor Lane also served as Chair of Vascular Research at Macquarie University, where he promoted collaboration across surgery, science, and engineering. Beyond his research, he was a committed teacher, examiner, and mentor who inspired many colleagues and trainees in both vascular surgery and phlebology.
The Australasian College of Phlebology acknowledges with gratitude Professor Lane’s significant contributions to our field. He will be remembered as a clinician, innovator, and teacher whose dedication to venous disease helped shape phlebology in Australasia.
We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Ms Judith Lane, his three children, his family, friends, colleagues, and the many patients whose lives were influenced by his work.
