AMC Accreditation

The College has a number of key aims we are working towards.

In Australia, there is currently no formal recognition for phlebology as a medical specialty. Ultimately, the long term goal of ACP is achieving Australian Medical Council (AMC) recognition of Phlebology as a distinct medical specialty. The recognition process is a long one, requiring significant resources and capital. The College is committed to achieving this aim.

As there is little acknowledgement for practicing in Phlebology, there is also a significant absence of Medicare coverage for the procedures performed. It is another key goal of the College to help improve the current situation relating to reimbursement for both ultrasound guided sclerotherapy and endovenous laser ablation.

The College also aims to improve the safety and delivery of treatments in the area of Phlebology. As such, a number of standards are currently under development to help guide practitioners in a more structured and informative manner, in delivering treatment.

College members receive a variety of other benefits and services such as discounted training, exam and conference fees, as well as access to a variety of publications. Details regarding membership benefits are listed below.

The College holds its Annual Scientific Meeting each year in various locations around Australia and New Zealand.  Members receive special discounted price for attending the conference.

Website

Our website has undergone significant redevelopment to provide further functionality to all of our members. Members can choose to advertise their details and membership on the website. The public are then able to search for a practitioner using location, procedures performed and specialty.

The website also incorporates information on training, upcoming events, previous journals, standards, past issues of Veinews and a forum for members to discuss cases and controversial issues.

Training Program

The College's Training Programs are evolving to meet ever growing needs of our members. We have an extensive training program for those who wish to undergo further study in Phlebology. There are two stages of training candidates may undergo. Practitioners may choose to undergo Part I to achieve their Sclerotherapy Certificate or may wish to progress to Part II to achieve Fellowship with the College (FACP) and earn the title of Phlebologist.

The College is also associated with several training institutions and universities. We notify all of our members as to training opportunities which arise from other institutions. For more detail regarding our training programs, please contact the College.

Phlebology, RSM

As of 2009, our journal amalgamated with the journal Phlebology published by the Royal Society of Medicine UK. This is an important development as Phlebology is indexed by Index Medicus and articles published will be available on Medline. We will also be able to keep our editorial independence with ACP Fellow Dr Paul Thibault remaining Editor of the ANZJP segment.

ANZ Journal of Phlebology

Past issues of the College's publication the ANZ Journal of Phlebology are available by contacting the College office. The journal provides an excellent forum for research and the sharing of information about our practices within Australia and New Zealand.

Venous Digest

Our members also receive an electronic copy of the American College of Phlebology's publication Venous Digest. We would encourage all potential members to supply an email address on their application so we are able to forward this publication to them.

Treatment Standards

The College also aims to improve the delivery of treatments in the area of Phlebology. As such, a number of standards are currently under development to help guide practitioners in a more structured and informative manner in delivering treatment. These guidelines are available from our website.

Patient Information Brochures

The College produces a number of patient information brochures designed to inform patients about the area of phlebology, related procedures, the activities of the College and relevant training practitioners undergo. These brochures are available to members and are able to be ordered from the College website shop.
